About Allen Chen

Allen Sinclair Chen, MD, MPH, ColumbiaDoctors Physiatrist

Allen S. Chen, MD, MPH, FAAPMR is the Director of Physiatry for the Columbia/NYP Spine Hospital, and an Assistant Clinical Professor of Rehabilitation and Regenerative Medicine at Columbia University in New York City. He specializes in treating patients with acute and chronic spine and sports injuries, without using opiate medications. Dr. Chen is double board certified in both Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation and Pain Medicine. He completed his undergraduate education at Harvard University with Honors, received his Masters of Public Health (M.P.H.) from University of California Los Angeles, and received his MD at New York University. He underwent residency training in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at University of Washington in Seattle, then completed a multidisciplinary interventional pain and spine fellowship at University of California Los Angeles. He has performed thousands of spine and musculoskeletal procedures on patients from all walks of life, from weekend warriors to professional athletes. He regularly lectures as international faculty for the North American Spine Society, and has taught procedure labs, given keynote lectures, and has been invited for speaking engagements around the world, most recently in Dubai, Beirut, Egypt, Singapore, Thailand, China, and Taiwan.

Dr. Chen has himself completed the LA and NYC marathons, and has provided medical coverage for the Seattle, San Francisco, and NYC marathons, as well as medical coverage for ultramarathons and multi-day endurance races in the Atacama Desert, Gobi Desert, Taklamakan Desert, Namibia, and Western Australia. Prior to joining faculty at Columbia University, Dr. Chen spent several years as a partner at a large medical group in California, where his roles included Chief of Technology and Associate Chief of the Spine Center. In addition to his busy clinical schedule, Dr. Chen conducts active research and is the Prinical Investigator on several ongoing studies. Prior projects have been pubished in various peer-reviewed journals, including the New England Journal of Medicine.
