Critical Care

Our pediatric critical care teams provide the most integrated and full service pediatric intensive care services in the area. Establish in 1999, our unit is situated in Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital at NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia University Irving Medical Center. Our mission is to provide advanced and comprehensive pediatric critical care services required for the most severe and debilitating conditions that children encounter.

The pediatric critical care teams work in close collaboration with dozens of medical and surgical partners at ColumbiaDoctors Children’s Health. Our pediatric intensivists provide a care model focusing on a team-based approach that ensures the most comprehensive and highest quality care for the sickest of children.

Leaders in Critical Care Medicine

Families choose to have their children treated here because, quite simply, we do it all and we do it best. Children who are “too sick” for other pediatric intensive care units in the area are referred here. We provide all forms of specialized surgery that includes the brain, heart, lungs, airway, spinal column, liver, kidney, intestines, bladder, and extremities.

Critical Care Facilities

We have 41 critical care beds divided into three distinct ICU services. These include a 14-bed pediatric cardiovascular ICU, a 13-bed general pediatric ICU and a recently constructed 14-bed pediatric neurological ICU. All our services are provided in private, family-friendly, state of the art rooms. Care of the children admitted to the 3 pediatric ICU services is directed and coordinated by a multidisciplinary team led by our 15 board-certified pediatric critical care physicians.

Collaboration

In order to provide this kind of transformative care, we rely on close partnerships with the numerous medical and surgical subspecialists at ColumbiaDoctors Children’s Health.

These teams include dedicated pediatric cardiothoracic surgeons, cardiologists, and heart transplant specialists for children with all forms of heart disease; pediatric neurosurgeons, orthopedists, and neurologists for diseases of the brain and spine; pediatric surgeons, transplant surgeons, urologists, gastroenterologists, nephrologists, and nutritional specialists for children undergoing solid organ transplants and complicated abdominal surgery; oncologists, hematologists, and stem cell transplant specialists for children who are extremely ill from cancer and blood disorders; and pulmonologists and ear, nose and throat surgeons for children with airway and lung disorders.

During the most overwhelming aspects of a child’s treatment or surgery for life-threatening conditions, our intensive care specialists partner with these subspecialty teams to ensure that the critically ill child can safely transition first to the general ward in the hospital and ultimately home. We do this in a manner that utilizes every available resource to ensure the best possible outcome.
