Innovative Programs & Services

Minimally Invasive Surgery

We have been innovators in minimally invasive surgery (MIS) and continue to refine and advance MIS techniques to correct malformations of the bladder and urethra in children.

During MIS, our surgeons use a tiny video camera called a laparoscope and thin surgical instruments inserted into the abdomen or pelvis through small incisions. The camera gives an excellent view of the operating area. With these miniature tools, surgeons apply the same techniques used during open surgery without a large incision.

ColumbiaDoctors pediatric urologists use minimally invasive surgery to correct high undescended testicles, varicoceles, hernias, obstructed kidneys, abnormal ureters and nonfunctioning kidneys.

Our patients benefit from minimally invasive surgery in several ways. They stay in the hospital for shorter periods, experience less pain, lose less blood, have smaller incisions, and more quickly return to their usual activities.  Our patients’ parents can also return to their other children at home and to work sooner.

Robotic Surgery

Our pediatric urologists have pioneered the use of robotic techniques to treat various conditions in children. We are the most experienced in the tri-state area and attract young patients from all over the world.

Robotic surgery is an advanced form of MIS. Our surgeons make several small incisions and use a video camera and small instruments; however, they also sit at a computer and use hand controls to guide a surgical robot in making precise movements.

We use robotic surgery for complex operations that require exceptional accuracy such as bladder reconstruction, surgery for ureteropelvic junction obstruction, ureteral reimplantation, partial or complete removal of the kidney and ureter, and reconstructive procedures in children with spina bifida.

Complex Reconstructive Surgery

Our pediatric urologists are experts in complex reconstructive surgery to address congenital disorders affecting the bladder, urethra, and genitalia. We also "re-operate" when patients who already had urologic surgery require an additional repair.

We treat patients from around the world and have years of experience collaborating with other specialists to achieve the best surgical outcomes.

Disorders of Sexual Development

ColumbiaDoctors pediatric urologists are national leaders in the treatment of children with sexual development disorders, such as a child born with ambiguous genitalia, which is best addressed by a multidisciplinary team.

Multidisciplinary Team Approach

We provide the most comprehensive care to ensure the best outcome for your child. To this end, we collaborate with specialists in endocrinology, maternal fetal medicine, nephrology, neurology, neurosurgery, oncology, orthopedics, pediatric surgery, and rehab medicine.

Transitional Care

We help children and adolescents with chronic urologic disorders move into adulthood and advocate for their health care needs.

Kidney Stone Disease

Our pediatric urologists are affiliated with the Center for Kidney Stone Care at Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital, one of the few comprehensive centers focused on detection and management of kidney stones in children and adolescents. We excel in the use of incision-free endoscopic approaches for breaking up kidney stones and the treatment of patients with complex medical and genetic disorders, including those who are wheelchair bound.

Our experts have made major contributions to the understanding and treatment of bed wetting and voiding function in children.

Prenatal Diagnosis and Corrective Surgery

ColumbiaDoctors specialists are known for their success in treating urologic disorders found during pregnancy. For example, we perform complex surgery for bladder exstrophy, urinary tract obstruction, and other genitourinary conditions present at birth and operate as soon as possible after delivery if necessary.
