Research

Dr. Gonda's primary research focus is the study of epigenetic alterations in gastric, esophageal and pancreatic cancer. Epigenetics is the study of genetic changes that result in modification of gene expression by mechanisms other then DNA sequence changes. These changes are early in carcinogenesis and therefore are very attractive markers of disease progression and targets of therapy or prevention. Prior to his faculty appointment, Dr Gonda completed an advanced fellowship in Therapeutic Endoscopy at Columbia University. His clinical research interests and practice are focused on the endoscopic diagnosis and treatment of esophageal and pancreato-biliary malignancies and pancreatitis.

Research Interests

  • Dr. Gonda's research interests are in the early detection of GI malignancies such as esophageal, pancreatic and biliary cancer. He is studying the use of molecular markers and endoscopic techniques to accurately diagnose these diseases at a preventable or possibly curable stage.
