About Thomas Jacobs

Dr. Jacobs is a Professor of Clinical Medicine at the College of Physicians of Columbia University. He graduated from Amherst College and Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, did his internship and residency at Presbyterian Hospital in New York. He served in the United States Army for two years, including for one year as medical officer in charge of a Military Provincial Health Assistance Team in the Republic of Vietnam. He completed a fellowship in Endocrinology at the University of Washington, and since then has been practicing medicine and endocrinology at Columbia.

He has a research interest in calcium/skeletal metabolism and has authored or coauthored 38 papers, case reports, and reviews published in the medical literature. His primary interest is the care of patients with endocrine disorders, especially problems involving the adrenals, thyroid, parathyroid, and pituitary glands, but he cares for many patients with diabetes and gonadal problems as well.

Dr. Jacobs has been selected for inclusion in every edition of Castle Connelly's America's Top Doctors since 2001. He teaches in several activities at the medical center, and has received both the Ewig Award for excellence in teaching and the Gold Foundation's Leonard Tow award for humanism in medicine.

Other professional activities include his role as a regular examiner for Physicians for Human Rights, documenting evidence of torture in immigrants seeking asylum in this country, and as a volunteer with Cosmo, the Columbia student-run free clinic in Washington Heights.
