Columbia's pediatric endocrinology team specializes in evaluating children for low bone mineral density, and are experts in the range of presentations, diagnosis, and treatment of pediatric bone disease. Ours is the only pediatric bone density testing and interpretation service in the New York City area.

We treat children with a range of bone conditions including osteogenesis imperfecta and osteoporosis (idiopathic, steroid- and inflammation-induced, and from disuse and immobilization).

Members of our pediatric bone mineral density service use specialized testing - dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) - to determine whether your child needs medical intervention. We perform DXA testing at Columbia's Metabolic Bone Disease Imaging Center. The members of our service who interpret DXA scans are pediatric endocrinologists certified as clinical densitometrists and are familiar with the pediatric bone density interpretation guidelines of the International Society for Clinical Densitometry. We interpret DXA studies using computer software based on data that our team collected over five years as a part of an NIH/NICHD-funded multicenter study of pediatric bone health.

In conjunction with our DXA interpretation service we prescribe and oversee bisphosphonate infusion therapy for children with severe bone disease at our Infusion Center.
