Superior High-Risk Prenatal Care
Our care for families begins even before a baby is born. Our neonatal team partners with the highly specialized maternal fetal medicine team in the Center for Prenatal Pediatrics along with pediatric surgeons, pediatric subspecialty services (including cardiologist, endocrinologists, nephrologists, gastroenterologists), and geneticists. This collaboration allows our team to provide families with every diagnostic and therapeutic option for mothers and babies.We collaborate with renowned authorities in neonatology, pediatric cardiology, neurology, urology, genetics, cardiac surgery and surgery, and all other pediatric subspecialties to provide treatment as soon as possible after the child is born.
ECMO Center
Our care of neonates covers the full range of medical and surgical subspecialties and technologies. Our center helped to develop ECMO (a heart and lung bypass therapy that supports patients until their own heart and lung function can recover), and we were among the first in the world to use this life-saving technology successfully in infants. We have the largest ECMO program in the tri-state area, and have among the best survival rates nationally and internationally, for which we are one of only a few worldwide centers to be awarded Platinum Level Center of Excellence status from Extracorporeal Life Support Organization.

Respiratory Care
The National Institutes of Health has recognized our NICU physicians for excellence in the treatment of respiratory disorders, especially for our extremely low incidence of chronic lung disease.
We were among the first specialists in the country to offer extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) therapy for infants with severe respiratory failure who cannot be treated successfully with conventional therapies. Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital is the oldest and most experienced of the few facilities in the tristate area to offer ECMO, an artificial heart and lung system that supports oxygenation of the body until a baby’s lungs can function on their own.
Our physicians also have particular expertise in treating newborns with congenital diaphragmatic hernia and have developed an approach to gently support their fragile lungs.
We care for newborns delivered through the EXIT (Ex-Utero Intrapartum Therapy) procedure. We perform this rare surgical procedure when the baby has a condition that leads to a blocked airway after birth. During a cesarean delivery (C-section), we insert an airway tube while the child is still connected to the mother through the umbilical cord.
We also manage respiratory complications with ventilators and continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP), helping infants to maintain adequate oxygen levels.
Heart Care
ColumbiaDoctors are widely recognized for neonatal heart surgery and maintain one of the only cardiac intensive care units devoted exclusively to neonates. Our outcomes are among the best in the world.
At our Congenital Heart Center, our physicians collaborate with experts in pediatric surgery, medicine, anesthesiology, perfusion, critical care, and cardiovascular support.
Neurologic Care
ColumbiaDoctors apply the latest neurological advances including electroencephalography (EEG) to assess brain function and provide hypothermia (cooling) therapy when needed. We led the development of the Cool-Cap that reduces the body temperature of newborns by circulating cold water through a cap placed on the head. Our physicians have shown that this therapy can reduce the risk disability related to Hypoxic-Ischemic Encephalopathy (HIE) or loss of oxygen to the brain.

Neonatal Comfort Care
Our specialists provide critical care to newborns, so they get stronger and healthier. However, some infants are affected by life-limiting conditions or terminal illnesses. To help them, our physicians have established a nationally known Neonatal Comfort Care Program, providing a high level of care and comfort. We believe that no matter how brief, each life is precious.
