Correcting Problems with Bone Growth

Leg and Knee

Your child’s legs and knees play a key role in how they move. When your child experiences leg or knee pain, limping, or an injury, it can affect everything they do. And while some issues improve naturally with growth, others require early intervention to guide development and prevent problems later on.

At Columbia Orthopedics, our pediatric leg and knee team uses advanced diagnostic imaging, the latest nonsurgical and surgical techniques, and a family-centered approach to deliver thoughtful, individualized care. We partner with parents at every step to help children grow strong, stay active, and enjoy a healthy, pain-free future.

What We Do

Pediatric leg and knee care is a subspecialty of pediatric orthopedics focused on diagnosing, treating, and managing leg and knee conditions in children and adolescents. Because children’s bones and joints are still developing, their care requires a precise understanding of growth patterns, muscle balance, and alignment. The goal is to help children move comfortably, prevent long-term complications, and keep them active and confident as they grow.

Care may include observation, physical therapy, bracing, orthotics, or surgical correction when needed. Treatments are designed to promote normal growth, restore alignment, and prevent long-term complications. Because children’s bones remodel as they grow, many conditions can be treated more effectively—and less invasively—than in adults if identified early.

Conditions We Treat

We treat the full range of pediatric leg and knee conditions, including

  • Knee pain or swelling that limits activity
  • Bowed legs (genu varum) or knock knees (genu valgum) that worsen or don’t correct with age
  • Leg length discrepancies (one leg longer than the other)
  • Patellar instability or kneecap dislocation
  • Growth plate injuries or fractures from sports or falls
  • ACL, MCL, or meniscus injuries
  • Osgood-Schlatter disease or other overuse injuries
  • Blount’s disease, tibial torsion, or other alignment disorders
  • Limping, stiffness, or difficulty walking or running

Our team is skilled in:

  • Nonsurgical management
  • Guided growth correction
  • Arthroscopic procedures

Care at Columbia

Our pediatric orthopedic leg and knee surgeons are fellowship-trained specialists with years of experience diagnosing and treating leg and knee conditions in children. They understand how growth, biomechanics, and activity levels affect both treatment and long-term outcomes.

We offer advanced imaging (low-dose X-rays, MRI, and ultrasound) to assess alignment and growth with minimal radiation. Our specialists are experts in the latest techniques and technologies, including growth modulation, 3D-guided surgical planning, arthroscopic knee reconstruction, and custom orthotics for precise correction and comfort.

Thoughtful, Personalized Treatment

Whenever possible, we begin with nonsurgical treatment options such as physical therapy, bracing, or activity modification. When surgery is required, we use the least invasive and most growth-friendly approach appropriate for the child’s age and condition. Our specialists work closely with families to ensure every treatment plan is safe, effective, and easy to understand.

Every child’s legs and growth pattern are unique. Our personalized treatment plans take into account your child’s age, activity level, condition, and long-term goals. Whether your child is learning to walk, recovering from an injury, or competing in sports, our team is dedicated to restoring comfort, strength, and mobility so they can grow and play without limits.
