Pediatric Neuromuscular Center/SMA Center

Under the direction of Andrei Constantinescu, MD, PhD, this program provides comprehensive care for children with respiratory problems associated with muscular dystrophy, spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) and other neuromuscular diseases. We also provide ventilation management when necessary.

Our pediatric pulmonologists offer comprehensive evaluations and collaborate with a range of specialist including pediatric and orthopedic surgeons, gastroenterologists, respiratory therapists, chest physiotherapists, feeding and speech/swallowing therapists. We work with our Ear, Nose and Throat experts to manage airway obstructions, and with pediatric rehabilitation specialists to manage airway secretions.

Our services include ongoing monitoring with pulmonary function tests, sleep studies, and assessment of respiratory muscle strength. We see children on an in-patient and out-patient basis, and have special expertise in non-invasive ventilation. Our team is known for their expertise in mechanical ventilation, tracheostomy management, flexible fiberoptic bronchoscopy, cough assist devices, and pulmonary clearance techniques.
