Pediatric Rheumatology Program

The Pediatric Rheumatology Program, affiliated with NewYork-Presbyterian Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital, provides world-class, compassionate care for young patients with a variety of autoimmune, inflammatory, and rheumatic conditions. We work closely with families, primary care doctors, and other specialists to diagnose and treat children who have symptoms of or have been diagnosed with an autoimmune disease.

Autoimmune disorders occur when the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks healthy tissue, causing inflammation and pain. The resulting symptoms point to a wide range of conditions that can be challenging to diagnose. Our team is committed to helping families reach an accurate diagnosis and developing a comprehensive treatment plan that addresses each child’s individual needs.

We also see children who have received a diagnosis elsewhere and are seeking treatment or a second opinion. Our goal is to help all our patients live happy, healthy, and productive lives.

Expert Diagnosis and Treatment of Rheumatic Conditions

Symptoms like joint pain do not always point to a rheumatic condition, but it is important to have your child looked at by a specialist with expertise in autoimmune disorders. Some common symptoms that bring children to our specialists include:

  • Ongoing joint or muscle pain
  • Unexplained fevers
  • Rash
  • Swelling or stiffness in the joints
  • Pain in the back, legs, or arms

Our specialists have extensive expertise with the diagnosis of rheumatic conditions, including juvenile arthritis, juvenile dermatomyositis, lupus, and many others. We also see children who have received abnormal results on tests for antinuclear antibodies (ANAs), which may indicate an autoimmune disorder.

With proper treatment and monitoring, many rheumatic diseases can be managed. Our patients have access to the latest medications and therapies, along with a range of specialists at NewYork-Presbyterian Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital, one of the top-rated hospitals in the country. We provide guidance and support to patients and their families throughout the treatment process, along with ongoing monitoring and care.

Our AMPS Program provides compassionate care for young people with amplified musculoskeletal pain syndrome.

What to Expect From Your Visit

Your first visit with a provider in the Pediatric Rheumatology Program will involve a physical exam and detailed discussion of your child’s symptoms. We will ask you questions about how long and how frequently your child has been experiencing symptoms, any family history of rheumatic diseases, and how your child’s condition is affecting your family.

We will look at any test results you have already received and will most likely schedule new blood tests or imaging tests, including X-ray, MRI, or CT. Once we have test results, we will schedule a follow up appointment to go over the results, answer your questions, and consider treatment options.

Living with a rheumatic disease can be challenging. Our program is designed to provide ongoing support for your child and family as you navigate a difficult condition.
