Sleep Study Test (Polysomnography)

Scheduling the Test

After your child visits the sleep clinic, our office will contact you to schedule the sleep study. Please ensure we have your current phone number on file. If you haven't heard from us within two weeks, feel free to call us at 212-305-2406.

The current wait time for a sleep study is approximately 2 to 4 months, depending on the type of study. We will also schedule a follow-up appointment 1 to 2 weeks after the test to review the results and discuss next steps.

If you need to cancel or reschedule your appointment, or if your child is feeling unwell, please notify us as soon as possible.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the sleep study measure?

The study records brain activity (sleep/wake stages), eye movement, heart rate, leg movement, breathing patterns, chest and belly movement, oxygen and carbon dioxide levels, airflow to the lungs, and snoring. The entire study is also recorded on video.

Will it hurt?

No, the test is painless. Wires, stickers, and belts are placed on your child's head, face, and body, but none of the equipment is sharp or uncomfortable.

When should we arrive?

Plan to arrive at the hospital around 8:30 PM on the night of the study. You'll be ready to leave around 6:00 AM the next morning. A sleep technician will meet you and guide you through the process.

Where is the test done?

The sleep study takes place on the 7th floor of the children's hospital, in the clinic area. Each patient has a private room for the night.

Can I stay with my child?

Yes. One parent or caregiver (over 18) will need to stay with your child at all times.

How can I prepare my child for the study?

You can help your child prepare by talking about the sleep study in advance. Reassure them that nothing will hurt and that you'll be with them the whole time.

What should we bring?

Please bring:

  • Your child's medications
  • Food or formula
  • Any respiratory equipment your child uses
  • Loose-fitting pajamas
  • Comfort items (blanket, toy, etc.)
