General Pediatric Outpatient Cardiology

If your child is experiencing symptoms such as shortness of breath, fainting, chest pain, or rapid or irregular heartbeat, you will most likely be referred to a pediatric cardiologist. Through an exam and tests, your child’s cardiologist will help determine the cause of the symptoms and, if needed, develop a treatment plan. Whether your child needs regular monitoring, medication, or surgical treatment, you’ll want to be in the best possible place for pediatric heart care.

Columbia’s pediatric cardiologists treat thousands of infants, children, and adolescents with heart issues every year, providing individualized, compassionate care for every child with heart issues, from the most benign to the most complex.

What to Expect From Your Appointment

Your first appointment with a Columbia pediatric cardiologist will begin with a full exam and medical history, and we will most likely conduct some tests that will help us determine the cause of your child’s symptoms. Initial tests are non-invasive and painless and are performed and analyzed by a team of experts with deep experience in the diagnosis of cardiac diseases. Tests may include:

  • Echocardiogram: Echocardiograms use sound waves to make pictures of the heart.
  • Electrocardiogram: A non-invasive test that measures electrical activity in the heart over a short period of time.
  • Holter monitor: Asmall device worn by your child for 24 hours or longer, which can record your child's heartbeat over a long period of time.
  • Ambulatory blood pressure monitoring: A non-invasive, 24-hour blood pressure test.
  • Exercise stress testing: A test that shows how your child’s heart performs during exercise.

Your appointment may take some time, so that we can be sure to get all the information we need for an accurate diagnosis. You will also meet some of our nurses, staff, sonographers, and other technicians who are all dedicated to making sure your child is comfortable during his or her time with us.

We may refer you for more advanced imaging tests, including cardiac CT, cardiac MRI, and, when we need information that cannot be obtained from imaging alone, a minimally invasive test called cardiac catheterization.

Specialized Programs

Depending on your child’s diagnosis, we may connect you to one of our programs that provides specialized care for specific heart issues.
