Fetal Cardiac Program
ColumbiaDoctors fetal cardiac program, located at NewYork-Presbyterian/Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital, is among the largest in the country with more than 1,900 fetal echocardiograms performed in 2015 and more than 1,000 new consultations seen that same year.
The abnormal fetal heart can have primary errors in its development (congenital heart disease), rhythm abnormalities, and primary and secondary functional disturbances. Examples of secondary functional disturbances occur in identical twin pregnancies complicated by Twin to Twin Transfusion Syndrome and secondary to maternal illnesses such as maternal diabetes. We evaluate and care for all degrees of fetal heart disease from minor to most complex.
We use state-of-the-art fetal cardiac imaging technologies, including fetal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for associated anomalies, to provide the most complete assessments possible. Our fetal cardiac program is integrated within the Center for Prenatal Pediatrics, allowing for thorough evaluations by a multidisciplinary team dedicated to providing precise diagnoses and the best treatment options and support for families facing complicated pregnancies.
Our experts are fetal cardiologists, maternal-fetal-medicine specialists, cardiac surgeons, neonatologists, and genetic counselors. Each new family’s transition into our care is eased by our nurse coordinators who collaborate with other specialized teams such as general surgery, urology, and more.
