What Makes Our Program Different
We care for a large population of patients with sickle cell disease, affording us with exceptional experience managing this disease. In 1983, Hematology, Oncology, and Stem Cell Transplantation within the Department of Pediatrics at Columbia became home to one of only ten National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute Comprehensive Sickle Cell Centers in the United States.
The New York State Department of Health has also accredited the Division as a Hemoglobinopathy Specialty Center.
Our Approach to Care
Specialized services that we offer our patients include:
A Center for Regular, Routine Care
A comprehensive care program to ensure that children have annual clinical, laboratory, radiologic, and psychosocial evaluations in accordance with national guidelines.
Management of Pain and Treatment Without a Hospital Stay
Outpatient management and preventive care of vaso-occlusive pain, fever, blood transfusions, and hydroxyurea therapy, which can reduce the frequency of pain and blood transfusions for patients with sickle cell disease.
Rapid Response to Pain Crises
A special “Pain Pathway” in the Emergency Department and outpatient clinic to ensure the rapid evaluation and treatment of sickle cell patients with vaso-occlusive crisis.
Access to an Array of Specialists and Clinical Trials
Our patients have access to all of the physicians throughout Columbia University Medical Center who specialize in pediatric conditions and who can help treat complications of sickle cell disease and other conditions.
For patients who may benefit from stem cell transplantation, we have access to one of the country’s largest Stem Cell Transplantation programs.
Our patients also have the opportunity to enter into many clinical trials, including stroke prevention trials, which would allow them access to new treatments.
