Adolescent Bariatric Surgery Program

Ilene Fennoy, MD, Medical Director, Comprehensive Adolescent Bariatric Surgery Program

Childhood obesity is a major public-health concern in the United States and throughout the world. Left unchecked, it can lead to high blood pressure, high cholesterol, joint pain, kidney disease, liver complications, and a host of other medical problems.

In the past twenty years, obesity rates in young people have been on the rise, and weight-related complications are unfortunately all too common in children and adolescents.

Many physicians and surgeons now agree that bariatric surgery can be a safe and effective treatment option for severely obese teens—one that can dramatically improve their long-term health and well-being once all other options have been exhausted.

The Center for Adolescent Bariatric Surgery at NewYork-Presbyterian Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital offers a comprehensive, multidisciplinary weight management program that includes:

  • Health and metabolic screening
  • Nutritional guidance, dietary management, and education
  • Individualized exercise programs
  • Laparoscopic bariatric surgery
  • Ongoing follow-up

Our compassionate team is dedicated to helping obese adolescents lose weight when conventional methods have been unsuccessful.
