Obstruction of the Uterovesical Junction (UVJ)

What is obstruction of the ureterovesical junction?

Children with a blockage where the ureter enters the bladder have a ureterovesical junction (UVJ) obstruction.

How is ureterovesical junction diagnosed?

A child may be evaluated for UVJ with the following tests:

  • Renal bladder ultrasound (RBUS), uses sound waves to view outline the kidneys and bladder.
  • MAG III renal scan to determine how each kidney is functioning and the degree of blockage.
  • MRI (magnetic resonance imaging), a diagnostic procedure that uses a combination of a large magnet, radiofrequencies and a computer to produce detailed images of the kidneys, ureters and bladder.

How is ureterovesical junction treated?

While some cases of UVJ obstruction improve on their own over time, others need to be corrected. Our surgical team can remove the obstructed segment of the affected ureter and may taper the remaining part of the ureter so it fits properly into the bladder.
