Retinal Degenerations (Pediatric)
What are retinal degenerations?
This refers to a group of disorders characterized by the loss of retinal function, and often leading to partial or total blindness. Many are genetically transmitted. The onset of symptoms may occur early in childhood, or be delayed until later in life. Although the outlook is often poor, advances in diagnostic and genetic testing, coupled with innovative approaches to personalized treatment, are beginning to give hope for affected patients. There is also the possibility of storing patient clinical and genetic information so that they can be notified if future therapies become available from which they may benefit.
