Retinopathy of Prematurity (Pediatric)

What is retinopathy of prematurity (ROP)?

This is a condition affecting premature infants. It is characterized by defects in the development of blood vessels in the retina. It a consequence of premature birth and the premature exposure of the developing eye to high oxygen.

How is ROP diagnosed?

ROP is detected by systematically examining premature infants soon after birth andrequires the diligent follow-up by a pediatric or retinal ophthalmologist.

How is ROP treated?

Our experts provide timely treatment with laser or intraocular medication if the developing blood vessels become highly disordered. Untreated, half of the children with affected eyes would become blind. With treatment the chances of blindness are greatly reduced.
