Colonoscopy

An important test for the early detection and prevention of colorectal cancer

A colonoscopy can help find colorectal cancer early, when it is often easier to treat. It can also help prevent cancer by finding and removing polyps before they become a problem. Our team offers colonoscopy screening, with a direct-access option for eligible patients.

What Is a Colonoscopy?

A colonoscopy is a procedure that lets your doctor examine the inside of your colon and rectum using a thin, flexible tube with a camera. It can help find polyps and other changes in the colon.

This is especially important because polyps can often be removed during the procedure before they turn into cancer.

Why Screening Matters

Colorectal cancer often does not cause symptoms in its early stages. Screening can help find problems early, when they may be easier to treat.

For many adults, screening should begin at age 45. Some people may need to start earlier based on their personal health history, family history, or other risk factors.

Who May Need Earlier Screening?

Some patients may need screening before age 45 or on a different schedule, especially those with:

  • A personal history of colon polyps or colorectal cancer
  • A strong family history of colorectal cancer or advanced polyps
  • A genetic syndrome such as familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP) or hereditary non-polyposis colorectal cancer (Lynch syndrome)
  • Inflammatory bowel disease, including Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis
  • Certain hereditary syndromes or other increased-risk conditions

Patients at increased risk should speak with a provider about the screening plan that is right for them.

Direct Access Colonoscopy Program

Our Direct Access Colonoscopy Program makes it easier for eligible patients to schedule a screening colonoscopy without a prior office visit.

You may qualify if you:

  • Are age 45 or older
  • Have a family history of colorectal cancer
  • Are generally healthy
  • Do not have symptoms such as bleeding or abdominal pain

If direct access is right for you, our team will review your history and help you schedule your procedure. Some patients may still need an initial office visit, depending on their symptoms or medical history.
