Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty)
Make an Appointment
Our team is here to help you make an appointment with the specialists that you need.
The delicate skin around the eyes is often one of the first areas to show signs of aging. Over time, the upper eyelids can begin to droop, and the lower lids may develop puffiness or under-eye bags, leading to a tired appearance even when you feel well.
Our double board-certified facial plastic surgeons have a deep understanding of facial anatomy and use the latest approaches to restore a youthful, refreshed appearance.
What Is Blepharoplasty?
Blepharoplasty (BLEF-er-oh-plast-tee), or eyelid surgery, is a procedure that improves the appearance of the upper eyelids, lower eyelids, or both. This is done by carefully removing or repositioning excess skin and fat and, in some cases, tightening underlying tissue to create a smoother, more defined eye area.
You may benefit from blepharoplasty if you notice:
- Drooping or sagging upper eyelids
- Excess skin that creates a heavy or hooded look
- Puffiness or bags under the eyes
- Fine lines or loose skin around the eyelids
- Asymmetry between the eyes
- Blocked peripheral vision due to excess upper eyelid skin
Blepharoplasty at Columbia
Your surgeon will evaluate your skin elasticity, eyelid fat, and muscle distribution, and the ideal outcome to ensure the best results. This may involve one or both of the following approaches:
- Upper blepharoplasty: An incision is hidden along the crease of the upper eyelid to remove excess skin and fat.
- Lower blepharoplasty: An incision is hidden along the lower lash line to remove excess skin and fat.
What to Expect From Blepharoplasty
Eyelid surgery is typically performed as an outpatient procedure using local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia. The procedure usually takes one to two hours, depending on the areas being treated.
After surgery, you may experience some swelling and bruising around the eyes. Your care team will provide clear guidance before and after surgery to support a smooth recovery.
