Embryology Lab

The Embryology and Andrology Laboratories at Columbia University Fertility Center represent one of the most advanced reproductive science facilities in the nation. Purpose-built to deliver precision, consistency, and safety at every stage of care, our laboratories maintain the highest standards of quality control and regulatory compliance, ensuring the best possible outcomes for every patient.

Our facilities feature state-of-the-art incubators, imaging systems, micromanipulation technology, and environmental monitoring, allowing for meticulous control of every parameter that influences gamete and embryo development. Every process—from culture media preparation to embryo transfer—is supported by redundant safeguards to protect frozen and stored eggs, sperm, and embryos under 24/7 validated surveillance.

Expertise and Capabilities

Our laboratory performs the full spectrum of assisted reproductive technologies, including:

A Team of Highly Skilled Embryologists

At the heart of the laboratory’s success is a team of exceptionally trained and highly skilled embryologists, each bringing advanced expertise in micromanipulation, cryobiology, and embryo culture.

Our embryologists are certified professionals with backgrounds spanning academic research, clinical practice, and innovation in reproductive biology. They combine technical mastery with deep compassion—understanding that every embryo represents a unique human story.

Through rigorous training, continuous competency assessment, and participation in global symposia, the team upholds a culture of excellence, integrity, and innovation. This commitment translates directly into consistently superior clinical outcomes and a patient experience grounded in empathy and trust.

Leadership

Dr. George Koustas, PhD, M.Med.Sci, BSc, CQP MCQI, FAHCS

Dr. George Koustas is the administrative laboratory director for Embryology and andrology at Columbia University Fertility Center, where he leads a large team of embryologists, andrologists, laboratory coordinators, and the transport team. He works closely with the Embryology and Andrology Supervisors and the Medical Director to align laboratory strategy with clinical goals, ensure compliance with regulatory standards, and drive innovation in scientific practice and workflow efficiency. With more than 15 years of international experience directing and managing IVF laboratories in the United States, United Kingdom, Denmark, and Australia, Dr. Koustas specializes in embryology laboratory management, quality systems and regulatory compliance, and optimizing clinical outcomes. He is passionate about training and advancing the careers of new embryologists and is frequently invited to speak at national and international conferences and workshops.

Dr. Koustas earned his PhD in embryology through a joint program with the University of Nottingham in the UK and the University of Sydney in Australia. He also holds a Master’s in Assisted Reproductive Technology from the University of Nottingham and a BSc in Molecular Biology and Genetics from Liverpool John Moores University, in addition to completing his embryology training at the University of Sydney and Westmead Fertility Centre.

He is a member of the American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM) and the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology (ESHRE), a Chartered Quality Professional (CQP MCQI) with the Chartered Quality Institute, a Fellow (FAHCS) and Consultant Clinical Scientist in Reproductive Science with the Academy of Healthcare Science, and a registered Clinical Scientist in Embryology with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) in the UK.

Philosophy

Behind every embryo and every data point is a person—or a couple—with a story, a hope, and a dream. Supporting individuals and families through one of the most emotional journeys of their lives is both a privilege and a profound responsibility. My role is rooted in science, but guided by compassion. Every action in our laboratory reflects that balance.
