Heart & Vascular
One of the largest and most comprehensive cardiology practices in the United States, ColumbiaDoctors Cardiology achieves some of the best outcomes in the nation, led by many of the world’s leading heart experts. Our physicians include general cardiologists, electrophysiologists with extensive experience treating patients with abnormal heart rhythms, interventional cardiologists, and cardiovascular surgeons. We also specialize in preventive cardiology, valvular heart disease, nuclear cardiology, heart failure, organ transplant, and offer a full range of highly advanced non-invasive cardiovascular imaging procedures.
ColumbiaDoctors renowned physician-scientists work together to offer our patients the latest in cardiovascular care--everything from highly advanced imaging that can create intricate maps of the blockages in a diseased heart, to leading-edge techniques in minimally-invasive surgery. We treat the whole patient, not just the disease. We are one of the largest and most comprehensive cardiology programs in the country--but we're also one of the most personal.
Services we provide and conditions we treat include:
Adult Congenital Heart Disease
The success of cardiac surgery in childhood has produced a large population of adults with congenital heart disease. With more than 30 different forms of congenital heart disease, it is difficult for adult patients to find cardiologists familiar with their individual anatomy and problems. ColumbiaDoctors offers one of the largest and oldest adult congenital heart disease programs in the United States, providing highly specialized care of adults with congenital heart disease, including expertise in echocardiography, interventional cardiac catheterization, pulmonary hypertension, interventional electrophysiology, complex congenital heart surgery, and cardiac transplantation.
Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (CICU)
Our eighteen-bed CICU is staffed by a highly skilled team of physicians with extensive experience in caring for some of the most high risk and seriously ill cardiac patients, with conditions including acute coronary syndromes and acute myocardial infarction, cardiogenic shock, end-stage congestive heart failure and cardiomyopathy, complicated arrhythmias and heart block, congenital heart disease complications, and pulmonary hypertension.
Chest Pain Center
Our innovative chest pain center was the first in the tri-state area to receive accreditation from the Society of Chest Pain Centers and Providers. Patients arriving at Columbia University Medical Center's Emergency Department with chest pain are immediately and expertly triaged into levels of care based on the urgency of their condition.
Experts in our Cardiac Electrophysiology Service offer a broad range of diagnostic and treatment services, such as non-invasive risk stratification for arrhythmia, laser lead extraction, device implant, and catheter ablation for arrhythmias. We have been a high-volume center for the management and treatment of atrial fibrillation for more than 15 years. We also offer risk detection for life-threatening arrhythmias, biventricular pacing, and specialized expertise in the removal of leads in patients with infected or damaged devices.
Heart Failure and Transplant
The top transplant program in the nation by volume and one of the largest programs in the world, we have three decades of experience in caring for cardiac transplant patients. Consistently ranked among the best in the nation by the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS), our cardiologists and cardiothoracic surgeons have a long and distinguished history of advancing standards of care by using innovative surgical techniques, applying our basic research in immunosuppression to the clinical setting, and inventing and perfecting life-sustaining cardiac assist devices that prolong life during the wait for organ availability. We are recognized leaders in the development of left ventricular assist devices (LVADs) that can either be used to prolong life while waiting for organ availability or as a destination therapy for patients who are not eligible for transplantation.
ColumbiaDoctors physicians in our Center for Interventional Vascular Therapy (CIVT) are practicing at the forefront of virtually every field of cardiac and vascular medicine. With more than 30 interventional cardiologists and other medical experts in minimally invasive cardiac care, we have assembled an interventional cardiovascular team that is second to none. Our staff of world-renowned clinicians, researchers, and educators, including some of the leading pioneers in the field, perform more than 10,000 cardiac diagnostic and interventional procedures annually. We are one of the world's leading referral centers for patients with complex cardiovascular, endovascular, and structural heart disease, such as chronic total occlusions, left main disease, valvular heart disease, or aortic aneurysms.
Pediatric cardiologists with ColumbiaDoctors offer specialized, compassionate care for even the smallest heart patients. We have expertise in a wide range of conditions and diseases that affect newborns, infants, children, adolescents, and young adults, including fetal, pediatric and adult congenital heart defects and anomalies, arrhythmias, acquired heart disease, cardiomyopathy and heart failure, heart transplant, and pulmonary hypertension.
Experts in preventive cardiology offer services to help reduce the risk of developing heart disease and to prevent recurrent heart problems, including routine screening exams, high-risk evaluations, nutrition counseling, and referral to smoking cessation, behavior management programs, and cardiovascular diagnostic testing.
Valvular Disease at the Structural Valve and Heart Center
ColumbiaDoctors physicians have led the development of modern treatment of valvular disease. We have been involved in more original research for valvular therapy and have performed more minimally invasive catheter-based aortic valve replacements, than any other institution in the United States. We are also at the forefront of minimally invasive approaches for mitral and tricuspid valve disease.
Columbia’s vascular medicine program is one of the first such programs in the New York region, with expertise in the diagnosis and treatment of conditions like peripheral artery disease, carotid artery stenosis, aneurysms, renal artery stenosis, and deep venous thrombosis. We offer the latest diagnostic options, including non-invasive flow studies, carotid dopplers, venous and arterial ultrasound, and abdominal aortic aneurysm. We also work with our patients to control their conditions through the management of risk factors like diabetes, hypertension and high cholesterol, medical treatment of the pain and cramping caused by reduced blood flow, and lifestyle modifications to improve health such as smoking cessation, weight loss, and exercise.
ColumbiaDoctors Cardiology provides services at multiple convenient locations, including our new ColumbiaDoctors Midtown facility, at 51 West 51st Street, NewYork-Presbyterian / Columbia University Medical Center and locations throughout Rockland and Westchester Counties.
