Message from the Leaders

As we enter the era of Precision Medicine we would like to update you on our recent efforts to advance “genetically guided care” within the Division of Cardiology and Cardiac Electrophysiology at Columbia University Medical Center (CUMC). Professor Arthur Wilde, MD, a world-renowned expert in cardiogenetics, specializing particularly in genetically acquired arrhythmias and cardiomyopathies, has joined us at Columbia for a sabbatical commencing in January, 2018. Dr. Wilde has partnered with us to lead our new Cardiometabolic Precision Medicine Program.

Part of this effort is to establish a clinic with a focus on genetically inherited cardiac diseases. The Cardiogenetics Clinic allows patients with heritable cardiac diseases, including cardiac arrhythmias, to have their genotypes identified, and their phenotypes assessed for risk stratification, treatment and management. The clinic will continue to expand the Clinical Genetics Center Wendy Chung, MD, PhD, has established for pediatric patients with cardiac disease and their families. Dr. Wilde’s world-class expertise and leadership will be invaluable during our initiation to the long-term success of this endeavor.

Our long-term goal is to provide the best practices for genomic medicine, with an emphasis on personalized medical care through an interdisciplinary team of experts from cardiology and genetics with the specific aims of intervention and prevention for disorders and arrhythmias. With the existing Columbia expertise in precision medicine, bioinformatics, clinical assessment, systems biology, clinical genetics, data science, pharmacology, public health, nursing and bioethics, it will be possible to responsibly implement personalized medicine in the New York area.
